What is a Membrane Switch?
A membrane switch is a user interface constructed from multiple layers of flexible polymer films and adhesives. The top layer, known as the graphic overlay, is the visual interface for the user, printed with keys, symbols, and branding. Sandwiched beneath are conductive circuit layers. When a user presses a key on the overlay, it flexes a top circuit layer through a spacer gap to make contact with a bottom circuit layer, momentarily closing a circuit and registering the command. They can be tactile (with a “click” feedback) or non-tactile.
How does it work?
The operation of a membrane switch is elegant in its simplicity. It consists of several key layers:
- Graphic Overlay: The protective, decorative outer layer the user interacts with.
- Top Circuit Layer: A thin, flexible film with conductive traces printed on its underside.
- Spacer Layer: An adhesive layer with cutouts that creates a gap, keeping the circuits normally open.
- Bottom Circuit Layer: A stationary film with the other half of the circuit traces. When a key is pressed, the top circuit layer is pushed through the spacer’s cutout, touching the bottom circuit layer at a specific point. This completes the circuit. The processor in the device detects which circuit was closed and executes the corresponding function. Releasing the key allows the top layer to flex back, opening the circuit again.
